Last year-- around this time last year, to be exact-- I went to Europe for the first time. More accurately, I went to the UK for an incredible 18 days, half spent on a songwriting retreat that a few of my best friends happened to be on, and the other half spent on a belated honeymoon with my husband, Zach. The former part of the excursion was spent in remote Scotland, west of Glasgow near the coast. My time with my husband was spent in London, and then driving through all of Wales. On the journey between Glasgow and London, going between the two legs of this life changing, coming of age trip, I turned to my best friend in the whole world Lizzy (who had just woken up from a nap) and said "I'm going to write a book." It was as if there had always been the desire and the drive to write a story inside me, but even though I write songs for a living, I could never quite manage to come up with and idea that inspired me enough. That was until I left my comfort zone for the blissful realm of relatively extended travel and had so many memorable experiences in Scotland. By the end of the train ride, I had furiously scribbled a rough outline and named most of the characters. With diligent work, and the tireless help of friends along the way, a year later-- the book is self-published and available on Amazon. Though it was inspired while I was on a modern-day, relatively uneventful trip, the story is a romantic fiction set in 1963. It tells the story of American girl, Rose Martin traveling with her friends and finding love in a blindsiding way while in Scotland. Her romance with Ian MacGregor, Scottish dreamer destined to live on a small island and inherit a business from his father, is not without hurdles-- stable girlfriends, nagging mothers, family expectations, misunderstandings, and distance. I hope you will take the journey across the pond with me, if not in real life, then on the page. This is a short, but hopefully fast-paced and endearing read that was such a tremendous joy to write.
